Owners Operator
can an owner operator take the expense of driving his personal truck to get to his company truck?
company truck for deliveries, because he cannot park the company truck at his residence so he leaves it in the freight yard?
According to the IRS: Commuting expenses. You cannot deduct the costs of taking a bus, trolley, subway, or taxi, or of driving a car between your home and your main or regular place of work. These costs are personal commuting expenses. You cannot deduct commuting expenses no matter how far your home is from your regular place of work. You cannot deduct commuting expenses even if you work during the commuting trip.
Your question is confusing. If you are an owner operator, you will not be driving to get to a “company truck”, as a company truck belongs to the company, not you. If you are driving a company truck, then you are an employee, not an owner operator. It really doesn’t matter though if you are an owner operator or an employee — you still can not take the expense of driving to the freight yard.
